James’s flatbar Allegro Pista

James liked the Allegro Pista but wanted some changes.
He wanted a higher gear (78″ approx) so we swapped on a Surly track cog, a 144pitch Cycle Underground chainring and fitted a nice Sram PC-7x chain.
He wanted riser bars so we fitted some Nitto Ramen riser bars, Nitto technomic stem and Champ grips. Oh yeh, that meant threading down the steerer and fitting a threaded headset… looks much better on the lugged steel frame (Well, that’s what Bill,Cat, Tess and Rob think … some of the crew like the 1″ ahead).

Jason’s Zen fixie

Jason brought his fixie in because his gearing was wrong. He had 48/15 (84.4 gear inches) and his knees were aching. After a bit of talk he decided to change down to 47/17 (74.7 gear inches). Luckily in these sizes we had a Sugino Zen NJS 144/47t ring and a Phil 17t cog available. He upgraded to an Izumi chain at the same time.
Jason came back a few days later to say the new ratio was better and had some photos he’d taken of his bike. Check these out…

Harry’s custom fixie

Mechanic Matt took to a set of clunker blue Velocity Deep V rims and turned out a nicely creative flip flop wheen set including radial double butted black spoked front and three cross  rear. This was all good, we all loved it. Except for the powder coated front rim. Man, the brakes won’t work. Anyway, the blue front wheel is still sitting here while Harry rides the rear.
Harry set this bike up himself using a stack of second hand gear and the missing bits from Human Powered (including the bell, …

The Brompton Fixie Project

So the time has finally come to unveil the bike I’ve been dreaming about for the last year or so. Taking LittlePixel’s idea, from bikeforums.net I’ve cooked up my own version of a fixed-wheel Brompton.
Starting with a 2009 S1E Brompton in clear laquer, I built a wheelset around Velocity Aerohead rims with a Phil Wood hub at the rear and a Pantour suspension hub at the front. I’m running on slick Schwalbe Stelvio tyres.
I’m running a cut-down Soma Noah’s Arc bar, clad in Velo Orange elkhide leather sleeves matched up …

Hanson’s Steamroller with B43s

Hanson wanted a hot wheel set for his Steam Roller. After a bit of discussion he confirmed a set of purple Velocity B43 rims on black hubs and spokes would suit… Check the results below!
Velocity B43 extreme track rims – $250 rear, $240 front or $490 per pair. Standard colours in stock and available now (other colours available depending on stock)
(note – we didn’t build the Steamroller, just helped with the hot wheelset)

What do you get when you combine a long wheelbase rigid lugged, japanese mountain bike with stupidly wide tyres, a stupidly strong chain, a stupidly low gear ratio and a home built overbraced rear rack?

Answer: Bill’s Focus! 2 and a half years in the making and it rolled out of the workshop on Sunday.

A 32 tooth ring, 20 tooth cog and the Sram P5 on a 26″ wheel gives
26.2, 32.4, 41.6,  53.2 and 65.7 gear inches.
It feels kinda too high at the bottom end and too low at the top …
