Electra Ticino

Beautiful doesn’t begin to describe this bike.
Built with a selection of custom built retro styled components, polished until they glow, and finished with fine details like hammered alloy fenders and stainless cable housing, this is a bike for bike lovers.
Built with Electra’s Flat Foot Technology which allows for proper leg extension without having the saddle so high you can’t get a foot down this is a great bike for the casual rider who wants the elegance on a European bike with a unique  style on their ride.

ISO Taper Bottom Brackets

For a while we’ve been looking for good quality ISO taper bottom brackets which are more affordable then a Phil, not that there is anything wrong with Phil Wood they do make the best of the best, but we know not everyone can afford one.
Well dust off your old Stronglight or Sugino 75 cranks at last we’ve found something that measures up. The Miche Primato and Primato Evolight bottom brackets.
The Primato uses flange-less cups so it is excellent for  micro chainline adjustment (just like a Phil)  and so will require …

Bio-degradable lubes and grease

Hello out there! We ride. We ride for transport, fitness and convenience but let’s not forget the massive environmental benefits of cycling. Yay! That’s what motivates the crew in the UK who make Green Oil. It’s a clean, green, quiet running machine!
Up until now we depended on the petro-chemical industry for chain lube and degreasers. Well not anymore!
We are now stocking Green Oil plant based, 100% petro-chemical free, 100% Palm oil free chain cleaner, lubes and grease. Ok so it’s made in the UK and carries with it a fair …

The Radbot Review

As the darker months continue, we’ve put a lot of energy into researching and testing bike lights. In this post, Lewis reviews the RadBot 1000 rear light. We’ve got the Radbot 1000 and the Radbot 500 available in the shop.
I’ve been using the Smart brand light in many revisions over the last 10 years. The latest version sold as the Planet Bike Superflash has a new competitor: The Portland Design Works Radbot.
Radbot is available in 1/2 Watt and 1 Watt versions. We’re all so used to the 1/2 Watt LED …

Winter mornings? Try a Netti head or ear warmer

Riding into the shop this morning my ears almost froze. That was the motivation for taking these shots of some head warmer options…

IRD Defiant track cranks

Now in stock – IRD Defiant 165mm/46 tooth crank set… the old skool look but with JIS taper for easy bottom bracket sourcing (with a 110mm spindle – easy!).
Check ‘em out.

Wot IRD says:
“Designed to be reminiscent of the Campy Strada and Sugino Mighty cranks of the 1970’s. But instead of CNC’ing from billet, we cold forge these before adding the fluting details. This makes for a stronger, more reliable design.”

Russell’s World Bike

Russell has a background in mountain bike racing. He knows how to throw a bike around.
Times have changed and these days he needs a bike for city riding. But something tough. He commutes to Latrobe Uni daily and lives in Brunswick. He shifts fairly heavy loads on the bike and tows trailers. Russell doesn’t own a car and was looking for a bike to be his primary form of transport.
In the past, we’ve serviced Russell’s hybrid Pakpare steel frame bike and recently fitted an 8 speed hub gear to it …

Thoughts on 2010 Brompton

Brompton folding bikes are all about choice, they are some standard models but the main way people buy them is fully custom.
Here is a link to the 2010 pricelist & custom order form.
What follows are some suggestions on what I’d go for.
P6R

I think this is the bike that has it all for me, it’s the fully featured Brompton with a rack for parked stability and real rolling when folded. It has the multi-position handlebars for all-day comfort and 6 well-spaced gears to cover a variety of terrain. All steel …

Bike lights, camera, action!

Daylight savings ended. Then the Ride On lights test in the latest edition of the Bicycle Victoria magazine was published. Then I spent a few days perusing the bike lights on offer at a few popular shops around Melbourne… now I’m motivated to make some comments on the lighting options we’ve got on offer and why.
This article is divided into five sections. These are:

Mini lights: legal (… on a full battery), discussing mini battery lights
Better choices of battery lights, including At a pinch – cheaper battery lights and also Quality …

Gazelle Cabby – the best option for carrying kids

Every time another Gazelle Cabby arrives, someone takes it for a test ride and decides it’s the bike for their family!
The Cabby is an extremely well engineered child carrying bike and is the best option for hauling kids from newborn until the total weight of your little ones gets to 75Kgs.
Our experience, plus feedback from customers is that two-wheel ‘boxbikes’ are more agile, faster and easier than three-wheelers (like the Christiania).
Gazelle build quality is exceptional, a full range of spare parts and accessories (including rain and sun covers, rear rack …

Dropping the price of the Gazelle Orange Innergy

The Gazelle Orange Innergy is the leading electric assist bike. As the guys at Gazelle Australia say:
“The [Innergy] Dutch bike of the year for 2009 is currently the most sophisticated E-Bike on the market. The combination of Gazelle quality and electric assistance is the perfect combination. Previously the Innergy was $4450. We have decided to reduce the price of the bike to $3950 to further encourage the use of this type of transport. If you ever get the chance to test ride the Orange Innergy, you will be suprised at …

Keeping it local… Australian made gear

We’ve spent a lot of time hunting around for Australian made bike parts and accessories. And it’s been successful. This post covers some of the gear available from the local market.
Ok so we know the benefits of local stuff… mimising transport requirements reduces emissions. And warranties are much easier. The products are better supported and with lots of these businesses we can give feedback on what we like and what doesn’t work. They will sometimes be able to incorporate this feedback into future designs and manufacturing runs. Anyway, local gear …
