Cyclist Visibility Research Project

Yarra Council’s Strategic Transport Unit has developed a ‘Cyclist Visibility Research Project’ via the Roadsafe Inner Melbourne Committee &the project has reached the implementation phase.The project will research why some cyclists don’t use lights or high visibility clothing.The project is being conducted in conjunction with the Cities of Melbourne & Port Phillip as well as the Victoria Police. Bicycle Victoria have been employed to design & conduct the research.

The research will be undertaken on key cycling routes throughout the winter with the first evening occurring May 19th from 4pm onwards at the intersection of Canning Street & Princes Street.The Police will stop riders both with and without lights and Bicycle Victoria will conduct surveys Those without lights who participate in the survey & a follow up survey can receive a set of lights worth $70.

There will be 3 evenings of research & the project report will be presented to the Roadsafe Inner Melbourne Committee & Council in September 2010.
