Bio-degradable lubes and grease

Hello out there! We ride. We ride for transport, fitness and convenience but let’s not forget the massive environmental benefits of cycling. Yay! That’s what motivates the crew in the UK who make Green Oil. It’s a clean, green, quiet running machine!

EcoGrease hits the cafe running

Up until now we depended on the petro-chemical industry for chain lube and degreasers. Well not anymore!

We are now stocking Green Oil plant based, 100% petro-chemical free, 100% Palm oil free chain cleaner, lubes and grease. Ok so it’s made in the UK and carries with it a fair whack of ‘lube miles’ (you know, like food miles only lower friction). But we reckon the benefits offset the transport cost.

Bill’s been running the Green Oil for a week now and offers a bit of feedback… It’s on a single speed drivetrain so I can’t give first hand comment on how the Green Oil would run on a derailleur geared bike but it’s running very smooth on an HG70 Shimano chain. At first glace I’d figured the Green Oil would be fairly heavy and prone to collecting grit off the road. Not so! A week in after a single application and a single wipe-down it’s staying on nicely, isn’t weeping from the links and isn’t collecting dirt. We’re working with the more potent lubes and cleaners day in, day out (and wear chemical resistant gloves), so the non-petrochemical benefits are probably lost on me but I’d be a strong supporter of a bottle of this stuff in the back shed of any cycling household!

I’ve been using green oil on my roadie with 10 speed Sram Rival running gear, commuting 3 days a week for the past two weeks.

When I apply the oil after cleaning the chain, I found after back pedaling for a bit, more dirt comes out of the chain. Handy to get hidden dirt out of the chain!

Unfortunately it does seem to also attract muck while riding, especially in crap weather. However, it still runs very smooth without any adverse effect in shifting.

I think I will continue using it, I’ll see how it goes over summer whenever it decides to come…
