NEWS FROM AUSBIKE AND THE WORKSHOP
Joel and Bill took the opportunity to check out this year’s AusBike Expo a couple of weeks back.
Traditionally a trade-only expo, this year it included a public day for the purpose of giving the cycling public a chance to talk directly to the manufacturers and importers of a wide range of bike gear. In the past the expo may have been focused towards competitive cycling but this year, a quite broad and refreshing range of city, commuting, urban and touring gear was on display. We spent the majority of the day on the Gazelle stall which was a great opportunity to learn from the crew at Gazelle Australia and to answer heaps of questions from people looking for city bikes, e-bikes and cargo bikes.
And back at home, another busy month in the workshop! It’s been the month of the cargo bike. We’ve been happily inundated with Bakfiet box bikes and Gazelle Cabbys. Due to their size, we try to have a maximum of four full size cargo bikes in the workshop for service at any one time.
Also in the cargo theme we’ve been excited by the ongoing popularity of the Surly Big Dummy and the Xtracycle range. Drop in and talk to us about load carrying and cargo bikes!

BIKE OF THE MONTH
Well that depends who you ask.
The Surly Long Haul Trucker took a number of votes as always and continues to be a very popular bike. Of course. As popular as ever, and now available with 26″ wheels even on the larger sizes. We keep the 54/56/58cm models in stock for test ride but Surly makes the Long Haul from 42cm up to 62cm to suit most sizes. Your choice of Blue or ‘Truckaccino’ colour. Pop some Paul Components Thumbies on and use the barcon shifters as thumb shifters… we’ve got another order going in this week, let us know if there’s anything you need: www.paulcomp.com

We’ve taken orders for yet more Gazelle Innergy e-bikes. These are particularly fun to test ride!
Keep posted as a number of new bike models hit the floor in the coming months.
There are new model Gazelles and Konas about to land soon. The new Kona range looks very cool, including the Dr Good and Dr Fine hub gear city bikes. Keep posted as these models land.
UPDATE FROM BIKE THE EARTH TOUR
After a desparate rush to get going, Bike the Earth left Melbourne on time. That was around 6 weeks ago. Since then they’ve ridden through Canberra, Sydney and are heading up north with a message
of sustainability.
Join their facebook page for regular updates.
Also on the Bike the Earth Blog and Facebook site are ongoing reviews of extremely cool bike gear we provided and sponsored to help get them going on their around the world tour.

- RIDE TO WORK DAY 2010
When?? 13th October 2010
What are we doing for it?? Last year we organised a breakfast at HQ. It
was good fun and heaps of cyclists came past but it felt like we were
doubling up. In the local area a number of organisations provided bigger
breakfasts and in town is the main event. We’re in discussions at the
moment with various event hosts to find the best ways we can work
together to make the day a success. The most promising option currently
is providing a free Bike Doctor service at a well placed breakfast just
around the corner. Sounds good. Sounds great. More details coming soon!

- BIKE RACK AS ART
http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/bikeracks/
Attention everyone! We’ve got until the 18th October to submit our
designs for the Bike Rack as Art competition.
“This Australia-wide design competition invites creative, street-savvy
designers to design a cutting edge public bike rack that can be seen as
a beautiful item of street art as well as a long-lasting, easy-to-use,
functional device.”
Oh, and there are $10,000, $5,000 and $2,000 cash prizes for the winner,
second and third places!
- MELBOURNE BIKE FEST IS APPROACHING FAST
