Rohloff speedhub

So you like riding. A lot. You ride for transport, for fitness, to work, on holiday, around town, in the bush… basically, you ride all the time. And, predictably, your drivetrain wears out. Quite often. Ouch. Quite inconvenient and pricey.

Then along came the Rohloff Speedhub: the 14 speed hub with a super wide gear range. Ok so it’s not entirely maintenance free (an oil change every 5,000 clicks is recommended).

We’ve now got three staff hooked on Rohloffs – Moz with four Rohloffs (!) on his various bikes, Joel with one going on his Big Dummy load bike and Bill with one on his humble Shogun tourer.

Oi, I only have three Rohloff’s, not four. One in the quad, one in my commuter (also goes in my touring bike) and one soon to be in a new velomobile.

Got to love the Speedhub. Got to love the Big Dummy! We run Speedhubs on our mountain bikes, including a mountain tandem. It’s really the only hub with a complete gear range and the fortitude to withstand off-road abuse. I run other hubs on our pavement bikes: Sram’s i-Motion 9 on a folder, a Nexus and Spectro7 on a pair of conventional bikes, and soon a Nuvinci CVT on an Xtracycle Free Radical cargo bike conversion. Those hubs all have their place in this world, but so far, none measure up to Rohloff’s grand invention.
